About Aurelius: Learn History

Aurelius: Learn History is an app for iPhone, iPad and Android that teaches history as connected stories: 127 illustrated lessons across 13 eras, from Ancient Egypt to the Cold War, each followed by a quiz.

Who makes it

Aurelius: Learn History is made by Agape Group GmbH, a Swiss company registered at Clarahofweg 25, 4058 Basel, Switzerland. It was founded by Angelo Sorbello, who writes the guides on this site.

We started Aurelius because history is usually taught as a list of names and dates to memorise, and lists are easy to forget. The same events become memorable when they are told in order, as a story, with the reasons behind them.

Editorial standards

Every lesson and quiz question is written by the Aurelius editorial team, which uses AI tools to help with research and first drafts. Nothing is published on the strength of a draft alone:

  • Sources. Lessons are based on ancient and medieval texts and on reputable modern histories, listed at the end of each lesson. We do not invent sources, quotes or links.
  • Primary sources. Lessons in the new format quote someone who was there or wrote soon after, attributed to the original work and, where relevant, its translator.
  • Fact-checking. Dates, names, numbers and quotations are checked against the sources before a lesson ships. Legends are presented as legends ("Livy says…") and debates as debates.
  • Images. Paintings, artefacts and photographs come from public collections, mostly via Wikimedia Commons, and every one is credited with its creator, date and licence. Where no authentic image exists we use an illustration, labelled as such; we never generate portraits of real people.
  • Comparisons. When we compare Aurelius: Learn History with other apps, we say that it is ours and describe the others using facts from their own store pages and websites, with the date we checked.
